AbstractUHPFRC is a novel material with exceptional qualities (high toughness, low permeability, improved ductility, and a very high strength capacity under compression) when compared to traditional concrete. It is fascinating to take advantages of its remarkable properties for structural design and then compare it with structural designs made of conventional concrete, as well as with existing structures in terms of size and cost effectiveness. The structural element that is being redesigned in this study is the bridge girder; the bridge is a part of the road construction project in Thailand carried out by the Department of Rural Roads. The UHPFRC design guideline is applied for UHPFRC girder design, whereas the AASHTO standard is applied for bridge design criteria. In the first part of this study, the bridge's girder is redesigned using UHPFRC, known as Ductal, and conventional concrete. In the second part, the cost of the redesigned girder with both types of concrete, as well as the cost of the girder and pier of the selected bridge in the road construction project, will be computed; the cost of pier is added to the cost of the girders if there are any piers between the two end supports. Finally, a comparison will be made between the weights and costs of the girder designed with ordinary concrete and UHPFRC. Besides, the cost of UHPFRC girders will be also compared with the cost of the bridge's girder which is a part of the road construction project. The results indicate that although the UHPFRC girder's size becomes smaller than that of an ordinary concrete girder, its cost remains higher; conversely, in most cases, the UHPFRC girder is less expensive than the bridge's girder of the road construction project.
