AbstractThe many problems in the field of Natural Language Understanding are still far from solved, due to the nature of Natural Languages that contain enormous amounts of ambiguity and anomalies. Natural Language Interface to databases is one important problem in Natural Language Understanding that has interested researchers from diverse backgrounds including databases, compilers, logic programming and more recently statistics and neural networks. While some progress has been made by narrowing down the scope of the natural language used, the systems that have been developed feel very constricted for the users. This thesis is focused on studying various ways in natural language sentences to command an agent to perform a subset of SQL operations, and use parse trees to translate these natural language sentences to equivalent SQL commands. The study will be done in a small database in the context of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), to make the study easier. I hope this study will help me gain more scalable insights that can be used in more general and bigger domains.
