AbstractThis study looked at the applicability of for assessment of forest biomass in Sulawesi, Indonesia. remote sensing and GIS Kabupaten Luwu, South Site ecology areas and remote sensing and GJS surveys. tree volume/biomass can be observed by technique and verified by ground truth SPOT image panchromatic 1990 and NOAA AVHRR 1992 were used to classify land cover. A slope map was generated from the topographic map by using Digital Elevation Model technique. Site ecology was used as the basis for calculating the volume and biomass . It was provided through overlay between land cover and s lope by using ERDAS and ARC/INFO in Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) AIT. Six forest classes were produced. The tree volume was calculated based on a ground study of 20 sample plots. The results indicate that mean volume varies in between forest c lasses. The highest volume is in the forest c lass corresponding to primary forest on plat to gentle slope in represents almost 400 cubic meters per hectare and bole biomass 2 40 tons per hectare. Vegetation analysis shows that there are some species which only grow in specific forest classes and some commercial species have an optimum volume on specific slopes.
