AbstractThe objective of this study is to find out the main factors inhibiting construction productivity and to establish information on labour productivity of main work items such as concreting , formwork and steel reinforcement in Malaysia and Thailand, in order to set u p a standard product on rate to be used for time and cost evaluation. In Thaila nd, the data collection covered three building construction projects for evaluating the productivity of main structural work items such as concreting, formwork and steel reinforcement and one big multi-purpose dam for evaluating equipment productivity. In Malaysia , data collection covered one building construction project. Large variation in productivity was found in all main structural work items under investigation. Labour cost was lower for concrete using pumping equipment, but with higher investment on equipment. Productivity on formwork and steel reinforcement items we re also varied within project a nd from project to project. Labour productivity is affected b y the complexities and height of the structural system, construction methods and equipment used, as well as the management effectiveness.
