AbstractAn attempt is made to study the clogging of recharge wells by suspended particles in recharging water with a laboratory scale model. The entire study is carried out with a pilot scale model, which simulates the conditions of recharge wells. The effects of clogging are studied experimentally in terms of suspended particles removal efficiency and headloss for different recharge rates and influent concentrations. Sand and kaoline clay suspension, were used as media and recharge water respectively. It is found in this study that it is possible to predict the local con- centration of suspended particles at various points, in the aquifer, by know- ing the properties of the aquifer, the initial concentration, and recharge rate from basic deep bed filter mathematical models. Since the particle re-tention during recharge is a physico-chemical phenomenon, it is necessary to carry out some laboratory scale experiments to find the characteristics of the particular media and suspension. These estimated values for the particular suspension and the modified form of IVE's model for deep bed filtration, were used to simulate the particle removal in the aquifer. Furthermore, as the flow conditions within the aquifer cannot be exactly predicted, three different flow conditions are assumed in the analysis and the results were compared.
