AbstractThis study was initiated with the objective of quantitatively assessing the water quality of a river (namely the Tanshui River including its tributaries), by means of "Water Quality indices". Based on available information from the several agencies in Taiwan, Republic of China, the entire river system is then classified into four classes. Appropriate stream standards are also recommended for each class of water making it suitable for its best usage. Besides the physical and chemical data of the existing water quality, biological data were also used together with physical and chemical data in this study. As a result, proposals are put forward for the water pollution control strategies for the Tanshui River Basin in particular and the Republic of china network as a whole.
