AbstractDeclining rate and coarse media filtration are two modifications of constant rate graded media filtration . The study indicates that the declining rate filtration produces comparable or better effluent than that o f constant rate filtration while producing a low headless development. The coarse media arrangement makes use of entire medium in efficient filtration run while producing less headless than that of graded filter media filtration .. Both declining rate a nd coarse media filtration are cost effective. SAATCI's (BDST) and MINT's equations can be successfully used to predict the declining rate filtration performances with the limited number of constant rate filtration experiments. The equations mentioned above also, provides a means for rational design o f tilter with the help of limited number of plot-scale experiments.
