AbstractExperiments with anaerobic tilters were conducted to test their performance with respect to the upgrading of waste stabilization ponds. The Den1trit1cation and. algal. removal processes were emphasized and mathematical models to explain these mechanisms were developed . The applied nitrate-N and TSS concentrations were 20-400 mg/L and 30-130 mg/L, respectively. The denitrification efficiencies with methanol were found to vary from 90% to 99%, depending upon temperature, hydraulic condition, influent nitrate-N concentration, specific surface area of the filter media, and C/N ratio. The phenomenon of denitrification with algal cells decomposed in the filter media was explained by mass balance. The removal efficiencies of algal particles were found to vary from 1.3% to 83% , depending highly upon the hydraulic condition. A design example illustrating the application of the above models and their design criteria are presented.
