AbstractThe model was developed to understand the nitrification occurring in the esturies base on bacterial growth which included the decay term. The maximum specific growth rate and the ratio of initial bacterial concentration to yield constant was estimated by fitting substrate depletion data from batch experiment, u sing nonlinear regression method. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the rate of nitrite oxidation and its inhibitory effect by sodium ion of sea water composition. The maximum specific growth rate of nitrite oxidizing bacteria in fresh water was estimate as 2.44x10- 2 1/h and reduced to 1.93x 10-; 1.21x10-2 , O.bBx10-2 , and 0.4lx10-2 1/h in the presence of sodium ion of 10, 25, 50, and 1003 based on sea water content, respectively. The other parameters were determined, such as, inhibition constant (Ki ) , saturation constant (K2 ) , a nd decay rate constant (k2d ) , and estimated as 2.0 g/l, 2.36 mg/ l as N, and q • .34x1u-3 1/h, respectively. The determination of maximum specific growth rate was reliable while those of the ratio of initial bacterial concentration to yield constant was limited. The inhibitory effect or sodium ion on the rate of nitrite oxidation was classified as a noncompetitive type.
