AbstractThe changes and behavior of a pesticide in a wide range of characteristics of an aquatic environment was investigated for a 4-day period to determine the fate of this organic pollutant. DDT was used in the study being the prototype that illustrates many properties and problems associated with organochlorines and because of its appearance in many agricultural wastes. A series of tests was run by varying parameters in a recirculated system. water and sediment samples were withdrawn periodically and analyzed for DDT using Gas chromatography. Results of the experiments showed the strong influence of turbidity on the disappearance of the pesticide in water. Both levels of turbidity caused the pesticide to disappear in large amount after one day suggesting two kinds of mechanism to occur such as accumulation in the bottom sediment in the case of high turbidity and volatilization at low turbidity. The effect of salinity on its disappearance in water was minimal and was attributed to more ionic strength which prevails at high salinity. The sediments appeared to adsorb differently according to their size character only when salinity was absent but a reverse behavior was observed at high salinity. This was interpreted in terms of surface phenomenon of the sediment particles due to the action of aqueous soluble ions to interfere in the active sites. It was also found out that the degree of suppression increases with finer particles. Along with the parameters mentioned, concentration and water movement also seemed to be important aspects on pesticide disappearance and accumulation.
