AbstractThe occurrence of groundwater and surface water in a part of the Andella Oya basin which is situated in a metamorphic terrain is investigated. The best formation for the storage of groundwater is granitic gneiss. The eastern part of the area is covered by littoral deposits and the water quality is poor due to mixing of sea water which has accumulated over a long period due to marine transgression. Although the other areas contain good quality groundwater the circulation is limited due to small numbers of fractures, shallow overburden and basinal type terrain. Forty locations for the dug wells and three locations for the tube wells were selected out of hundred and twenty sounding points. Precipitation in the area contributes 2.45% of it to the net groundwater storage, while 37.8% or 399.64 x x 10 6 m3 discharges into the lagoon and the balance is loss due to evapotranspiration. Groundwater storage change due to channel seepage and deep percolation of irrigation water were calculated. The possibility of storing the Andella Oya runoff in a part of the lagoon and the associated problems are discussed.
