AbstractThe Kaeng Krung concrete faced rockfill dam will be constructed across the khlong yan river, some 100 km northwest of Surat Thani Province. The dam will be founded on the pebbly mudstone formation of Carboniferous age which is locally covered by the weathered rhyolitic tuff. The Cretaceous granite is encountered in dam site vicinity downstream from the dam. The rock is strong and is suitable for dam and powerhouse foundation but the joints may cause some problems in the tunneling work. The ground water table along both ridges surrounding the reservoir rim is as high as the proposed storage level. The saddle area south of the dam was cut by a fault but it is considered water tight and the serious leakage is not anticipated.
