Abstract | Evaluation of rock mass quality is done along the diversion tunnel and its portal at Cheiw Lan damsite, Surat Thani Province, Thailand. Both C5IR-Geomechan1cs classification and NGI-tunnelling quality index are applied to compare their applicability-. The determination o f basic physical properties, uniaxial compressive strength, uniaxial tensile strength and deformation moduli including the study of borehole logs are carried out to supplement information needed in the assessment of rock mass quality. The analysis of rock slope stab.i.li ty is accomplished. by utilizing the lower hemisphere stereographic projection. The residual shear strengths across the plane of weakness and internal friction angles are determined together with the field investigation of discontinuities and the assessment of rock mass quality related to stability of slope cut. The results obtained from this study indicate that the rock mass quality is generally good for tunnelling and fair to good for foundation, but the poorer quality rocks may be anticipated where higher degree of weathering and/or shear zones are found. The results of rock slope stability analyses show that most of the portal slopes are stable. However, some cut slopes are still susceptible to failure. The potential slope problems can be solved by adjusting the slope orientations and/or angles as well as clearing o f the potential sliding blocks. |
