Abstract | The direct testing procedure for obtaining the shear strength parameters of partially Saturated soils is time-consuming and complicated due to difficulties involved in controlling the pore pressures. Hence a simpler indirect testing procedure is very much required. The evaluation of strength parameters of partially saturated soil is studied here with reference to the simpler procedure proposed by CHANTAWANGUL (1983). The Variables considered in this study are the degree of saturation, initial water content and strength at two different values of dry density. In this stud y some indirect tests are conducted on partially saturated soils --i.e. no attempt is made to control. or measure both the pore air pressure and pore water pressure. They include the UU, UC, CU and Pressure Plate tests. From the results of these tests, a linear relationships has been obtained between initial. suction and initial water content. This relationship can be used to obtain strength parameters for partially saturated soils. It has been found that it is better to get c', 0' from CU test on fully saturated samples, and obtain ¢b from unconfine compression test and suction measurement on partially saturated samples to apply FREDLUND's effective strength equation. |
