Abstract | Dam failures, caused by dispersive soils due to their high erosion properties, have occurred in many countries in the world. This problem is one of the geotechnical engineer's major concerns. To improve the engineering properties of dispersive soils, various chemical additives have been tried in the past. Chemical additives for preventing erosion of dispersive soils has been found to be an effective methods to improve dispersive soils. dispersive soils have characteristics like higher sodium content and lower total dissolved salt in percolating water. However, soil dispersion is governed by many factors, such as environment, high or low PH value, various additives, mineralogy, compositions of clay, climatic condition etc. So it is difficult to get same results from the field and laboratory tests on these type of soils. Some of the test conducted for identification of these soils are: crumb test, pinhole test, SCS dispersion test, turbidity test, physical erosion test, chemical test and X-ray analysis. Due to the complex properties and lack of sufficient knowledge to understand the behavior of these soils, it's difficult to control its dispersive behavior. Some of the tests mentioned above can not be very reliably for positive identification of dispersive soils. In the present work, the effect of nigh and low PH value on the chemical stabilization of dispersive soils is studied, in addition to understanding the behavior of these soils. The sample are collected from two different sites and the chemical additives used are quick lime, sodium chloride, aluminum sulfate, gypsum and fly ash, The physical properties of dispersive soils before and after treatment are determined and the effect of chemical additives and curing on compaction properties are studied. An effect is also made to understand the chemical properties of dispersive soil. |
