Abstract | The study looks into the process of land and residential development in the eastern urban fringe areas of Dhaka which have been recently undergoing a transformation from a rural character to urban through individual household efforts. It examines the effectiveness of administrative control over those areas. It then concentrates on different types of land tenure and the processes of land and residential development with their resultant residential patterns in order to assess their effectiveness in fulfilling the housing needs of the city people. The study draws attention to the significance and the various merits of individual household efforts in fulfilling their housing needs. It also draws attention to the concerned authorities and indicates their lack of awareness regarding the current problems in those areas of Dhaka city. The study also recommends that a more realistic planning approach be taken in regards to these problems. |
