AbstractThis is an exploratory study aimed at understanding certain aspects of the emergence of entrepreneurship among women. One part of the study focused on examining the current assistance programs available to small entrepreneurs. The experiences of ninety-four women entrepreneurs from the three areas of Calamba, Los Banos and San Pablo City in Laguna were utilized to provide answers to the first objective. An examination of the background of these women revealed some interesting points. Neither familiarity with a particular area nor descent from families with business experience is a decisive factor to a woman's entry into business. Education is found to be an important predisposing factor to a woman's entrepreneurial entry. On the other hand, very few women receive special training in business before starting their own business. Women go into business primarily for economic gain. They are greatly encouraged by an anticipation of a high demand for the product. Certain factors, however, were found to have affected their choice of reasons and perception of encouraging factors. A profile of the enterprises established by women is provided. The study delved also into certain aspects of women's entrepreneurial behavior. In the process of setting-up and running their enterprise, women receive very little assistance. Agencies rendering the current national program of assistance to small enterprises perform three types of activities: stimulatory, supportive and sustaining. It was revealed that greater emphasis is placed by these agencies on the first two types of activities; the least attention is given to sustaining activities. Based on the findings of this study and considering also its limitations, some recommendations for planning purposes and for further study are made.
