AbstractA conventional tobacco barn was retrofitted in the existing barns to use geothermal energy in San Kampaeng, Chiang Mai from a nearby geothermal power plant. The study also includes the scaling and corrosion potential of the geothermal fluid, material selection, and economic evaluation of the system. A new project located in a favorable site near the geothermal area was also investigated. The same design was employed but in this project the cost of the barn and of the land was considered on the economic evolution. Preliminary investigation indicates that scaling was not a major problem and corrosion problem could be prevented by using stainless steel. The economic evaluation favors geothermal energy of the conventional system. The retrofit is more attractive than installing a new curing barn. However, investors could still profit on constructing a new curing barn.
