AbstractThe performance of an intermittent ammonia-water absorption refrigerator with 25 m2 flat plate solar collector system containing 282 kg of aqua-ammonia solution (46% ammonia in water) was tested experimentally and the results were checked against a theoretical model. The amount of ice produced from this system is about 65 kg on a clear day, instead of 100 kg as originally expected. It was found that the reason for this shortcoming is that the area of the evaporator coil is too small. An improved design is proposed which theoretically should produce 100 kg of ice per day. This could provide cool storage for 214 kg of vegetables.
