AbstractThis study is focussed on the street vendors, an informal sector group, in Bangkok city. It is based on field data collected from five areas in the city, names, Pratunam, Saphankhwai, Soi Luecha 1, Victory Monument and North Bus Station. The findings shows that most of the vendors operate on fixed location, and average length of operation is approximately 6.6 years. For the vendors, capital is a most important item in both establishing business and continuing with it. Their initial fund comes mainly from their own saving. The vendors obtain their supplies from wholesalers of wholesale market, and their main target groups of selling are middle income groups. They think competition does not have any negative effect on their income. Most of the vendors do not have regular day-off, and the average length of operation is about 11 hours a day. Average size of operation is about 1.45, and two-thirds of the vendors do not have any employees. The study also concerns the socio-economic status of the vendors. Two-thirds of the vendors are women, and 40 per cent are below 29 years of age. Their educational level is mostly under primary school. Two-thirds of the vendors are migrants. mostly from Central region. Their residences are not far from their place of operation. Lastly, their average income is about 3,300 bath, and their family total income is 5,200 baht. For half of the vendors, vending business in the main source of income. The study suggests the need for the provision of proper space for the street vendors as a short term solution, and also, integrating them into the retailing system by upgrading their operation as a long term solution.
