Abstract | This study in Mae Sao irrigation project, Chiang Mai Province is an exploratory research which attempts to examine the present situation and enforcement of a local traditional water management system which was used prior to the construction of a modern irrigation system, centrally planned and managed. An enquiry was made to find out how the water users responded to such new data and which changes and adaptations took place concerning the traditional water management system. The study show that it was not substantially modified and that it remains a decisive factor contributing to effective water management. The traditional organization and leadership system are still operative and efficient and this research tries to find out and analyze the factors which make the conservation of the system possible and contribute to its efficiency. |
