Abstract | This study attempts to measure and analyze the performance of 5 bus companies in Malaysia, using the concept of interfirm comparison (IFC) and the fish-bone diagrams. A pyramid of relevant ratios, starting from the prime ratio of operating profit/operating assets, were developed to show the interlink of the various factors that were affecting the performance and profitability of a company. Both financial and non-financial ratios were used in the analysis to give a better picture of the situation. Fish-bone diagrams were established based on the main causal factors, like revenue, and the various operating costs. This is a gook checklist for further analysis to the causes for the high or low IFC ratios. This type of analysis tend to draw out the root problems. This type of comparison and analysis, will be of particular value to top management, for they provide an overall review of the performance, supported by a wealth of information about every significant area of the business so as to reveal hidden weaknesses and potential strengths which need to be further built up. A detail analysis was done for the weakest company of the sample. It was found that the main problem area with the company was poor management other than the bus fare which is not within the control of the company. |
