Abstract | The effect of dynamic capabilities on new product success is not direct. Instead, the causal model has other variables that have not been comprehensively investigated. This research investigated the effects of dynamic capabilities, operational capabilities, market orientation, and environmental dynamism on new product success. The research improved the dynamic capabilities measurement with sensing, seizing, reconfiguring, and integrating. Data from 872 manufacturers in 22 industries collected through a questionnaire were analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling. The dynamic capabilities measurement by provided good reliability and validity. The second-order construct provided better reliability and validity than the first-order construct. Environmental dynamism affected market orientation, which affected dynamic capabilities and operational capabilities. Dynamic capabilities and market orientation improved new product success through operational capabilities, which fully mediated this relationship. Finally, the research investigated the relationship between the elements of variables and synchronized the microstructural equation model with the house of dynamic capabilities model. This research contributes three new insights: firstly, the improved measurement of dynamic capabilities; secondly, the comprehensive model of dynamic capabilities, operational capabilities, market orientation, environmental dynamism, and new product success; and thirdly, the microstructural equation model of the elements of variables. Managers could use the question in this research to assess their capabilities and compare their results with the large-scale survey provided by the research. The empirical model derived from private manufacturing company data should be further tested in service industries, public firms, and non-profit organizations. |
