AbstractThe Sukhothai Ground Water Development project can be considered as a pilot scheme for the utilization of ground water for wet season supplement and dry season irrigation in Thailand. Partial operation of the scheme was started during early 1981 and full operation started from March 1982. To assess the present situation after the partial operation of the scheme, the study is taken up. Before going to operational study an attempt is taken to find the distribution of aquifer characteristics over the project area by Jacob method, as well as checking the well condition and water requirement, with the help of the modified Penman method. The results obtained from this study indicate that the transmissibility is higher in the northeastern part but there are more interference effects because of lower storage coefficients. The planting of rice should not start from March, and a maximum of 15% of the land can be utilized for rice cultivation during the dry period from December to April. The pumping schedule has been haphazard , not maintaining the schedule given by AIT (1980F. The flow system is very complex after the full operation of the scheme: there are localized effects as well as different aquifer responses. The water level recedes from January to August and recovers from September to December. The study can be taken further for finding an optimum pumping schedule as well as a cropping pattern.
