AbstractA conjunctive use model for the extension of irrigation by releases from a reservoir is developed. The model seeks to examine the operating policy of the reservoir with a view to firm up the power generation from the dam power house , the releases from the reservoir being supplemented by groundwater pumpages thereby ensuring adequate supply for existing as well as extended irrigation. The concept is very similar to that of pumped storage schemes, except that instead of pumping water back into the reservoir the water is to be pumped from the groundwater reservoir for irrigation purposes. The analysis is carried out using linear programming in a deterministic environment with a specified reliability. The model is applied to the Ramganga Reservoir across a major tributary of the Ganga River in India. The results are very promising and the model is worth considering for implementation.
