AbstractThis research was conducted to investigate the chemical compositions of fly ash collected from the Mae Moh lignite power plant , Larnpang province, Thailand. The physical and mechanical properties of fly ash cement mortar were also studied . In an attempt to improv e the compressive strength of fly ash cement mortar, fly ash was ground to increase its fineness by using a grinding machine developed for grinding rice husk ash. However , if the replacement of fly ash were low percentage in fly ash cement mortar it would be difficult to observe the effects of improved compressive strengths due to the fly ash having different finenesses. Therefore in this program, samples of fly ash cement mortar containing high percentages of fly ash replacement having different finenesses of fly ashes were cast and tested for their compressive strengths. Test results showed that fly ash collected from the Mae Moh power plant contained a very low percentage of silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide and a very high percentage of calcium oxide as compared to fly ash from other countries. The strengths of fly ash cement mortar indicated that the improvement of compressive strengths at 3, 7 and 28 days were very small for fly ashes ground up to 88.7 percent passing sieve no.325. However, for fly ash ground to a fineness of 97 percent, there was an increase of 34 percent in the compressive strengths at 28 days of fly ash cement mortar.
