AbstractA study is made on the state of art on Land Subsidence including various causes, prediction methods and mathematical modeling. From the review of various studies reported in the literature it is concluded that the main cause of land subsidence is considered to be the lowering of piezometric levels of confined aquifers by excess withdrawal of groundwater. The theory on land subsidence is greatly advanced and mathematical modeling has been developed from many points of view. Land subsidence causes great damage which can be reduced either by stopping groundwater pumpage or by replenishing depleted aquifers by artificial recharge. It is not uncommon to find a river basin where the excess flood water is causing damage while the piezometric pressure in the underlying aquifers is being lowered for meeting increasing water demands, giving rise to severe land subsidence . Application of operation research techniques become very useful in this case. Land subsidence should now be considered as one of the important constraints in the groundwater development process but also in the planning of a water resources system as well as in the optimal water allocation in a basin composed of groundwater and ยท surface water resources. This report is lass than a summary on such a vast subject like this. However, an attempt is heling made to brief overview of the various aspects of concern. references is presented, the contributions of which thorough understanding of the phenomenon.
