AbstractThree commercially available local made tractor front mounted reaper-windrowers (FMI, Ittefaq and AMRI) were field tested to measure and evaluate their performance on wheat crop, technical and economic feasibility under local agro-climatic conditions in Pakistan. The average field capacity of the FMI reaper was 0.42 ha/hr when operating in low 2nd or 3rd gears of tractor. The average filed capacity of Ittefaq and AMRI reapers were found to be 0.39 ha/hr and 0.4 ha/hr respectively, when operating in low 2nd or 3rd gears. The total cost for reaping using mechanical reapers with tractor was Rs. 185.0/ha, Rs 214.0/ha and Rs. 209.0/ha for FMI, Ittefaq and AMRI reaper respectively. The cost of manual reaping was Rs. 268.0/ha The results indicate that the reaper performance was satisfactory, and economical for the farmers but from the actual field work and farmers' interviews who own these mechanical reapers, the time lost due to machine breakdowns (parts failure) was found to be a major problem at the farms.
