Abstract | Mathematical models were developed f or four types of lugged cage wheels, viz, radial, inclined., a symmetrical and symmetrical, to predict the maximum number of lugs on these cage wheels before mud blocking began at a defined wheel rotational speed., relating soil properties and wheel sizes. These models take account of mud removal at the bottom most level or at the soil surface level running at a certain sinkage with and without side fiat type rims. Experiments were carried out to verify the models by determining the rotational peed required for mud clearing by simulating mud blocking for radial, asymmetrical (200, 30°&4 5° ) and symmetrical c200 ,30°&4 50) type lugs in a .Laboratory s oil bin. Two speed ranges were noted bet ween which the wheel cleared the mud in soil-soil failure at the bottom level of the wheel in all the tests leaving a thin to thick film of soil adhering to the lug surfaces. The models were verified with the filed experiment results conducted previously. Theoretical curves were presented to predict the maximum number of lugs at the operating wheel speed, at different soil cohesion, wheel sizes and sinkage. |
