AbstractThe 'Turtle' tractor (standard model) manufactured in the Philippines was tested for field performance and economic evaluation. Filed testing at different field conditions was done using the tractor with its original rotor wheel, modified rotor wheel and a levelling board. Results showed that the tractor worked satisfactorily, even is fields with high stubbles. The average field capacity of the tractor was 0.48 hectare per hour. This shows that the 'Turtle' tractor could prepare the land for transplanting rice 3 to 5 times faster than other power tillers can. The average fuel consumption was 1.69 liters per hour (10 li per ha). Statistical tests showed that the work rate at different field conditions had no significant differences. However, highly significant differences occurred between the work rates at different passes which evidently showed that the work performance of the tractor was greatly affected by the stubble content and softness of the soil. Cost analysis shows that at present wage levels in the Philippines, preparing the land using the 'Turtle' tractor has a breakeven point of 8 ha. The breakeven point using the traditionally 'carabao-plow-harrow' method is 2.25 ha. on the whole, the machine performed well and is recommended to be adapted by local farmers.
