AbstractA retractive lug mechanism was developed to solve the road transportation problem of tractors fitter with cage wheels. A pair of cage wheels with retractive lugs to fit along-side rubber tyres was developed for a Kubota L2201 tractor. The width of lugs was 30cm which was twice that of the strakes supplied by Kubota. Each cage wheel contained eight retractable lugs. The outside diameter of the cage wheels was 10cm smaller than the rubber tyres with retracted lugs and 10cm greater with the open lugs. The performance of the Kubota tractor using cage wheels was compared with high lugged tyres and strakes supplied by the manufacturer. The tractor was made to run on flooded and puddled clay fields and load was applied by towing a MF135 tractor. In the worst field condition the tractor using cage wheels exerted three to four times more pull and transmitted about three times more drawbar power as compared to the high lug tyres. The cages-high lug tyres combination exerted double the pull and power as compared to strakers-high lug tyres combination for tractor working under puddled field condition. The retractive lugged cage wheels performed well on paved road. No transportation problem of the cage wheels was recorded during the experiments.
