AbstractA new type of dryer for paddy using natural convection of indirectly heated air was designed and fabricated. Thin vertical columns of paddy exposed at both sides to hot air were subjected to drying. Rice-husk was utilized as the source of energy for heating the air through an indigenous heat exchanger consisting of three cylinders made of G.I. sheets. The exhaust from the rice-husk fired furnace was passed through the pipes to raise their surface temperature. The ambient air surrounding the external surface of the heat exchanger pipes was heated and passed in between the grain columns due to natural convection. The performance of the rice-husk furnace was evaluated in terms of the rice-husk feed rate required for obtaining different temperatures inside the dryer during daytime and night operation. It was possible to calculate the surface heat transfer coefficients for the dryer heat exchanger based on theoretical relationship for comparison purposes. The heat exchanger efficiency was also calculated based on the heating value of the rice-husk and the computed heat transfer values. The performance of the dryer was studied with respect to the dryer air temperature and initial moisture of the rewetted paddy. The moisture removal rates in the dryer were faster in comparison with the shade-dried paddy. An increase in the drying air temperature resulted in increased moisture removal rate. The influence of initial moisture content of paddy on moisture removal rate was minimal. No significant differences were noticed in the head rice yields of the paddy dried inside the dryer and under shade.
