AbstractThe Kriging technique , an optimal linear estimation method for spatial stochastic processes, was considered a long with the development of of general and interactive library of computer programs. Application of these program to several set of actual data led to several important conclusions : When the data under consideration satisfy the first or second order of stationarity, removal of the mean or standardization greatly improves the estimation accuracy as expressed by the estimation variance. A reduction in the number of neighboring points for a Kriged point reduces the computation load but increases the estimation variance. Consequently, a balance between computation load and estimation accuracy should be made in order to arrive at a suitable number of neighboring points employed in the Kriging scheme. The estimation variance depends upon the geometric configuration of the data points but not the individual values at these points. As a consequence, the Fictitious Data Point Method can very well be used for advising the optimal reinforcement of an existing measurement network or for determining the optimal location of a possible additional measurement point. The above library of computer programs has been made available on both the mainframe (IBM 3031) and on the micro-computer (IBM PC), to enhance the practice of Kriging in actual situations.
