AbstractThe objective of this study is to develop a microcomputer-based computer- aided-design (CAD) system for single-input-single-output (SISO) control systems, using the classical control design approach. The major problem in the classical approach is the difficulty to design lag-lead compensators and to adjust parameters in PID controllers. This CAD system is developed to facilitate this difficulty. Using the CAD system, the designer has only to compare response curves of two different designs at a time without any need to directly specify control parameters. The optimal control ยท parameters are selected by interactive optimization techniques which are based on the modified Fibonacci and Complex methods. The proposed CAD system is implemented on a 16-bit microcomputer and applied to three design examples. The results show that the designs obtained by using the CAD system are superior to the ones obtained by the conventional classical control design approach.
