AbstractThere have been many studies on the estimation of the variance of the T-year event for several distributions. However, for the log Perarson type 3 distribution, some estimation has not been available for the new methods introduced recently, such as the methods of mixed moments. It is then desirable to consider this problem for the log Pearson type 3 distribution as well as the closely related generalized gamma distribution. In this study, an attempt is made to derive formulas for the estimation of the variance of the T-year event for the log Pearson type 3 and the Generalized Gamma distributions for seven different methods. Related computer programs are subsequently developed to facilitate the use of theoretical formulas. Variances and covariances of the parameter estimates are also made available by this study. Typical sets of data are run to test the workability of the developed computer programs. Having been tested, these computer programs are very useful in the determination of the most appropriate method for parameter estimation based on widely used criteria.
