AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to develop an intelligent automatic query formulation procedure for document retrieval systems and to empirically evaluate its performance. The procedure is based on the fuzzy set theory. The possibility theory is applied as a tool of imprecise query. Correlation coefficient between index terms and fuzzy set membership values, given by the user, which indicate the degrees of possibility of index terms being identifiers of the user's desired documents are used to formulate index terms for the next query. The index of fuzziness is defined to measure the sufficiency of the information exchange between the user and machine. The user repeats answering the queries on the possibility of selected index terms until the index of fuzziness of the index terms is below a given threshold value. The procedure is implemented as part of an experimental document retrieval system and numerical experiments are conducted conducted to evaluate its practical effectiveness.
