AbstractThe Savings Department of the Taipei Post Office was taken as the example to do the operation research of a bank teller system by employing the simulation technique. The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) language was first attempted in modelling the system. However, due to the inflexibility of the GPSS in dealing with different distributions at different time periods, a FORTRAN-based model was also developed. Both the GPSS and FORTRAN-based models were designed to provide almost the same information from the outputs, even though the input formats are different. From the output validation, it was found that the FORTRAN-based model performed better and hence it was chosen for further consideration. Several policy simulation runs were made. The results obtained indicate the usefulness of the model in evaluating the different alternatives on the rearrangement of human resources. The model can also be used to evaluate the performance of the system under new patterns of service and interarrival times.
