AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the slope stability of a rockfill embankment dam, with concrete facing under seismic action. Khao Laem Dam, with a maximum height of 92 m, located in the west of Thailand in Kanchanaburi province and presently under construction is analyzed. Till April 983, the site of this dam was considered free of seismic activity, but the recent tremors in the neighborhood of the dam, some of them moderately strong with magnitudes up to 5.5 on the Richter scale has forced the responsible authorities to review the stability of this dam afresh. As such, the following aspects of earthquake analysis are re-examined: (1) Static analysis of dam. (2) Evaluation of seismicity and design earthquake ground motion at dam site. (3) Dynamic properties of dam bacterial. (4) dynamic analysis of dam. (5) Permanent deformations and dynamic slope stability of dam. The dam is idealized as a two-dimensional structure and programs ISBILD and FLUSH are used for the static and dynamic analysis of the dam respectively. The dynamic slope stability analysis is carried out by Newmark's approach. A design earthquake of magnitude 6.5, resulting in a peak acceleration of 0.25 g and a duration of 18 s is considered.
