AbstractThe capacity of the commercial port of Taichung Harbor was studied. The study separated the port into three main systems categorized by the currently handled types of cargo: general cargo ; pipe cargo; a nd g-rain cargo. The aim was to indicate conditions for optimum operation of the seaport. Ship turn-around times during a one-year period (July 1982 - June 1983) were analyzed to find the existing patterns of ship arrival and servicing at the port. Then, queuing models and a total expected cost model were applied to evaluate the optimum capacity for each system. The results of the study indicated that the optimum capacity of the general cargo system , with the berths which were completed during the first construction stage, would be almost twice the current demand. This suggests that new wharves for general cargo would not be necessary in the near future. The current capacity of the pipe cargo system was found to be close to the optimum. The current utilization of the grain cargo facilities was found to be far greater than the optimum capacity; the installation of new grain cargo facilities appear to be urgently required.
