AbstractThe A.I.T. test embankment was initiated by Dr. Hideki Ohta in 1981 for the purpose of maxing a case history study of stability and settlement of the embankment. There were some tests conducted in the early stages but it was round necessary to conduct some more tests to supplement and also to cross check with the previous results. Various field and laboratory tests were conducted to determine the compressibility and untrained shear strength of soft clay. Standard and special oedometer tests were carried. out to determine the compressibility and stress history of the soft clay. The undrained shear strength of the soft clay is determine from field vane shear, Dutch cone penetration and laboratory triaxial tests. Two boreholes were conducted to obtained the undisturbed samples. The undisturbed samples from the first boreholes were used in the oedometer tests and Atterberg Limit while the undisturbed samples from second borehole were essentially used in the triaxial tests. The undrained strength from field vane shear test, Su(fv), was correlated with other tests such as the Dutch cone penetration Tests and triaxial compression and extension tests (CKoU-comp. and ext). The following correlations were obtained; Su(comp ) = 0.89 SU (fv) Su (ext) = 0.75 S u(fv) Ckd = 21 Su (fv) The undrained shear strength from triaxial compression and extension tests (CKoU-comp and ext) and direct simple shear tests are considered by many researchers that these tests give a better interpretation of the stability analysis of embankment on soft clay.
