AbstractCompressibilitys, i.e., constrained modulus and compression ratio, of Bangkok subs oil were studied and analyzed. The study has been don e on deep Bangkok subsoil , starting from first stiff clay to third stiff clay from various locations in Bangkok. In relative density determination of sand, the formulae given by TERZAGHI & PECK, HOUGH, GIBBS & HOLTZ, SCHULTZE & MENZENBACH, a nd MARCUSSON & BIEGANOUSKY seam reason ably to be used. The formulae for determination of constrained modulus of sand given b y SCHU LTZE & MOUSSA , SCHULTZE & MENZENBACH and SCHMEBTMANN yield quite good agreement with laboratory results. SCHULTZF. & MOUSSA form u la is always overestimated while SCHOLTZE & MENZENBACH and SCHMERTMANN formulae are always underestimated. For stiff clay, STROUD and EL-MOURSI, et. al., formulae gave reasonable results in 3rd. stiff clay only. STHOUD formula t or constrained module us determination always slightly underestimated while EL-MOITHSI, et. al. , formula for compression ratio determination always slightly overestimated. Note here that for the values of modulus obtained from the tests are constrained modulus which are not aqual to the elastic modulus. However, the difference is small, compared to errors and scatter of data from testings. In settlement prediction at Bank of Thailand and Bangkok Hank , it was found that the modified theory of elasticity gave good agreement with observed settlement. By using the constrained modulus sand from the author's correlation gave slightly underestimated settlement while SCHULTZE & MENZENBACH correlation gave slightly highrise buildings in Bangkok by POULOS' method, it was found that 42-63 % by the author ) and 30-40 % (by DOONGROJIRAT, 1983 ) of total settlement contributed by compression of piles and movement of soil at the pile tips and 37-58 % (by the author) and 6 0-70 % (by ROONGRUJIRAT, 1983) by clay and sand layers below the pile tips.
