Abstract | In order to assess the cyclic behaviour of sandy deposits in this region, a series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on sand specimens obtained from Chao Phraya River, Bangkok, Thailand. The effects of relative density, confining pressure and cyclic stress ratio on the liquefaction resistance as well as shear modulus and damping ratio of the sand were investigated. For a given relative density, the liquefaction resistance can be represented by a stress ratio irrespective of the confining pressure and the number of loading cycles required to cause liquefaction. The liquefaction resistance was found greater when stress ratio was higher. It was observed that the stress ratio required to cause initial liquefaction was higher for dense specimens than for loose specimens. This test series also permitted the evaluation of dynamic characteristics such as the shear modulus and the damping ratio. The shear modulus and the damping ratios computed from stress-strain curves obtained during cyclic loading were found to decrease and to increase with increasing shear strain, respectively. It was also observed that the modulus values decreased with decreasing relative density for any given strain level. However, for any given confining pressure and relative density the damping ratios calculated widely differed from each other, indicating the difficulties for evaluating accurate damping ratio without an accurate measurement and a recording equipment. |
