Abstract | A probabilistic modelling of the strength of rockfill is carried out by using monte Carlo techniques by the nearest-neighbor space low. Khao Leam Dam, located in the western part of Thailand is used as example. The domain is divided into a set of equitized blocks. Porosity values for each block is obtained by cross-correlation with the permeability values using the bivariate normal density function. Bartion's Equivalent Roughness Method is applied to get friction resistance of rockfill from each porosity values. For each set of realizations of rockfill porosity values obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation, the Barton's Equation in the form of computer program ACFANG was used to compute the friction angle of the rockfill. A series of realizations gives a series of friction angles. Then, using Bishop's Simplified method of slope stability analysis, values of the plane strain factor of safety are obtained corresponding to each set of friction angles obtained in each realization. Then, the mean and variance of factor of safety was computed. The probability of failure is based on factor of safety less than 1. The results show that for the three arbitrary failure surface being analyzed, the dam is safe with large values of factor of safety, F.S., using Bishop's method and low values of failure probability. The autoregressive parameter, and cross-correlation factor, CORR will affect on the probability of failure, the higher and CORR, the higher probability of failure was obtained. |
