Abstract | The problem of excessive settlement, especially the undrained movement is the serious problem of the embankment design in CHACHOENGSAO region. The settlement at the center line of the 5,54 m. height embankment were analyzed by stress path method using CKoUC test, conventional one dimensional method using oedometer test, elasticity method and finite element method for undrained and consolidation settlement. The results were compared with the field record of 5 months The soft clay . at this site is usual compared to the soft clay in Bangkok area. The clay has very thin crust (approximately 1m. thick) and has high over consolidation ratio (OCR 2.5 to 2.8) The thickness of the soft clay is only 9.00 m. These cause the rate of the settlement of this embankment to be unusually quick. The prediction of excess pore pressure by stress path test can be concluded as the best method based on available field data from as several sites in Bangkok area . The closest estimate of initial settlement was obtained by elastic method using the settlement ratio method of D'APPOLONIA et al (1971) and using modulus from stress path test, while the stress-path tests give the good prediction of rate of undrained movement. The total settlement(undrained and consolidation settlement ) of the test embankment are estimated by ASAOKA' method and is considered to be the most reasonable value. While drained stress path method gives 15% lower. The method by SKEMPTON' also give the reasonable predicted value, although believed to be on the conservative side, No method give the good prediction in rate of consolidation settlement due to the very low value of coefficient of consolidation; Cv determined from laboratory testing. The suitable Cv(field) is estimated to be about 160 time of Cv(lab),evaluating on the two dimensional consolidation condition of isotropic permeability, double drainage condition. |
