AbstractRoad accident records can provide a reliable means of identifying hazardous locations a long highway. The present study was addressed toward developing a simple and reason able technique for identifying potentially hazardous locations even in absence of adequate accident reports. A linear route diagram was developed by plotting the horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and speed profiles of an experimental site wit h the associated sight distance profiles a nd existing center-line markings for the same location. From this diagram, potentially hazardous sites were identified where: speed decreased due to vehicular performance on uphill gradients; increased vehicle speeds on down hill gradients exceeded a safe speed as controlled by horizontal curvature; in adequate sight distance was available for the observed operating speeds; and inadequate length of permissible passing zones were marked on the roadway, or at sites displaying combinations of these conditions.
