AbstractInitially, this research was planned as a study of the benefits of traffic signal coordination for energy conservation. The study was subsequently extended to evaluate the effects of changing from the former two-way operation of a part of Bangkok into one-way operation. TRANSYT/7 and TRANSYT/8 computer programs were used for the study. The effects of applying different stop-weighting values (K value) in TRANSYT/7, and that of applying double-cycle action at appropriate intersections, were evaluated. Traffic flow data for the former two-way operation were provided by the Office of the Committee for the Management of Road Traffic (OCMRT). Limited traffic volume surveys were conducted to obtain traffic flows on one-way system. Related data were provided by OCMRT or were collected by conducting field surveys. The principal network performance parameters -- mean journey speed, fuel consumption. total delay and average number of stops -- were studied. Results of the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test for the study case indicated that the impact of K-value variations on mean journey speed, fuel consumption, and total delay were not significant. Smaller K-values were found to result in fewer stops. Double-cycle action at appropriate intersections improved the network performance. TRANSYT/8 gave better network performance parameters than TRANSYT/7. One-way operation resulted in improvement of all network performance parameters.
