Abstract | Previous studies on the conservation potential of the historical town centre of Phuket have encouraged an in-depth study on action plans for a specific historical area of Phuket. The historical ship houses in the study area which have precious architectural and aesthetic values are in a stage of gradual decay and unsuitable renovations. Since these buildings are facing a certain pressure by the general economic development of the town, therefore, this study attempts to propose appropriate aspects of planning policy and action programmes to be commensurate with the economic situation. According to the findings, a basic framework of policy guidelines, strategies and aspects of implementation is formulated, together with physical planning proposals. The Phuket Conservation project would be useless, unless the potential economic benefits of f conservation project are analyzed and communicated to the local residents. As a result of the study, it appears to be feasible to start implementing the project on a short-term basis. With appropriate monitoring of the effects and after careful further study of urban design options and cost-benefit analysis, the long-term policy outlined could be gradually implemented. |
