AbstractThis study is concerned with regional disparity in Taiwan, the Republic o f China. Existing trends of interregional and intraregional disparities have bee n examined, mainly- in terms of income inequality and social development, in order to identify problems and weaknesses in the process of regional development . This research re veal s that during t h e period 1971-1981 the interregional income disparity in Taiwan Area has decreased but the intraregional income disparity h as increased . However , both interregional and intraregional social disparities have decreased. The research has also found that industrialization has played a major role in increasing regional disparity, and government investment has contribute d t o reduce it. It is suggested that, while developing a region, measures should be taken to promote government investment, and the formation of a n effective plan of government investment a t the county level is essential. From the study it is also apparent that prior to the formation of a plan further research of t his type a nd other such related fields are of vital importance.
