AbstractThis research is an investigative study on the housing conditions and needs in Arkong Bato, It aims to provide a comprehensive data base for the preparation and formulation of plans for the proposed development and upgrading of the area. The existing socio-economic characteristics and physical housing conditions of the study area were surveyed, studied and analyzed. In addition, an evaluation of the people's perception and attitudes toward their housing and their preferences for future housing were likewise undertaken. A field survey, conducted from June to July, 1983, was carried out to identify these situation. Based on the findings or the survey , the housing conditions in Arkong Bato, in general, were below the level of acceptance for normal living (livability) in terms of physical structures, sanitation, environmental conditions and community facilities and services. The residents perceived housing problems, i.e., water supply, poor drainage, flooding, etc. as their most serious problems in the community. Consequently, they recognize these areas - improvements in community facilities and services and environmental conditions as their top priorities for housing improvements. Moreover, it was found that the residents were more interested in undertaking self-help housing projects rather than availing of financial support from financing institutions. This study winds up with recommendations which might provide useful insights for the proposed development or upgrading of Arkong Bato.
