AbstractCooperation is an integral part of human existence and culture. the cooperative movement has born out of this spirit of cooperation. A cooperative requires members' participation at all levels. A lot of cooperatives today are not effective due to their top-down approaches and their alienation for the prevailing socio-economic and politico-cultural environment. The Soon Klang Thewa Credit Union Cooperative Ltd., was started in 1965 in a community of slum dwellers in the heart of Bangkok. Most of the members are of low household income, low education and irregular jobs. It is found out that the members have rather weak and bureaucratic concept about their credit union, but fair idea about its functions. Their level of participation in the annual meeting is rather high but their participation in the loan-services is not so high. Their level of satisfaction in terms of the C.U. activities and the benefits that they have received from the C.U. is high. They also have a high satisfaction with the board-members. They are looking for "personality", "experiences" and "credibility" out of their leaders. Their general expectations have been fulfilled and their future expectation is that the credit union would become a pioneer in community development. The credit union leaders have seen the credit union problems as lack of understanding on the credit union among the members and board-members. loan delinquencies, generally stagnant regular savings, negative effects of voluntary works and insufficient loan-allocations to members. This research has recommended that the Credit Union members need special has recommended that the Credit Union to help increasing the memberships and to alleviate the prevailing problems. Concept regarding loans and saving need a special emphasis. Procedures of loans on factors involved in loan delinquencies, slight increase of regulars saving, limits of loan services and implications of the voluntary work.
